The 217-bed building could be built in Parkside - but there won't be any parking spots

A high rise student accommodation development with 217 beds could be built on the site of a former factory just outside Coventry city centre.

Bosses at Coventry Parkside Ltd have applied for planning permission to build the new hall of residence at 33 Parkside, Cheylesmore .

Parts of the building, which backs on to the ring road, would be 10 storeys high.

The existing building used to be a factory before becoming an industrial training centre.

If the planning application is successful the building would be demolished to make way for the new student accommodation.

Each student room would have a bed, desk, kitchenette, shower room and breakfast bar or small dining area.

The building would include a common room, gym, laundry and courtyard with seats.

The developers say they will plant trees to block the view of the ring road for those on the lower floors.

Students living there wouldn’t be allowed to own cars, and if they borrowed or hired them for a short time they wouldn’t be allowed to park near the building.

Coun Naeem Akhtar (Lab, St Michael’s) who covers the area of the proposed development said: “As a ward councillor I always support this kind of development.

“It’s close to the city centre , it’s on unused land, it’s not in a residential area and it’s close to other student accommodation blocks so it’s the ideal place.

“It’s good for the city, good for the university and good for the students.”

The site is not far from Paradise House, a student accommodation block in Paradise Street on the site for a former social club.

Planning officers from Coventry City Council are set to make a decision by mid-December using their delegated powers.

Public consultation on the plans for 33 Parkside started yesterday and finishes on Thursday, October 6.

If the application is approved the development will be the latest in a series of student accommodation blocks in the city.

Developments are being built in Hales Street and the Belgrade Plaza while work is due to start in Bishop Street.

Let's face facts here. Cov Uni isn't really one of the best and what is going to happen when the Asian/Chinese universities really come on stream?

We're putting all of our eggs in one basket, just as we did with the motor industry. Lessons learned? - Don't make me laugh!
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
