A man died after he was hit by a van and a car as he lay in the middle of an unlit country road at night, a court heard.

A judge was told neither driver stopped to check what they had hit, and both carried on to a nearby car boot sale without reporting what had happened to the police.

The driver of the Ford Transit, Martin Williams, even tried to wipe victim Aaron Hughes’s blood off his vehicle before being arrested at his home later that day.

At Leamington Magistrates Court, Williams, 56, of Kings Heath, Birmingham, pleaded guilty to failing to stop after an accident and failing to report it.

He was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, and was ordered to do 200 hours of unpaid work, to pay £160 costs and was banned from driving for six months.

The driver of a Ford Fiesta, Betty Howell, 69, of Smiths Wood, Solihull, has denied failing to stop and failing to report an accident, and will stand trial at the same court in September.

Prosecutor Shawn Williams said 32-year-old Mr Hughes died after being hit by two vehicles in Blythe Road, an unlit rural road between Coleshill and Shustoke, at around 4.30am on September 27 last year.

Shawn Williams said Mr Hughes, from Allesley Park, Coventry, had suffered a decline in his mental health following the deaths of his dad and sister.
