Binmen are being forced to make extra collections to catch-up on a backlog of uncollected waste.

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council has had to take the unusual step of making its refuse team go out today to collect bins which have been left standing for days.

Householders in many areas across the east of Nuneaton were left bemused as to why their green and black bins, which they had put out for their usual collection on Wednesday, remained unemptied by the end of the day.

Concerns were raised on social media about health and safety issues due to the searing heat that hit the borough earlier in the week.

The borough council quickly posted messages on social-media suggesting that there had been issues with the collection vehicles and stressed that they aimed to get the bins emptied as soon as possible.

Extra collections have been put on for the past two days but the council’s own refuse team and the recycling team will be out throughout the day on Friday.

A town hall spokesperson said: “We have been having issues this week which has resulted in missed bins on the green and black bin collection rounds. This is due to vehicle availability.

“We will be catching up on all outstanding collections for the green and black bins throughout the week with collections on Saturday, July 23, including any reported missed bins which have not yet been collected.

“We ask that bins are lefty out and we will empty them as quickly as we can.”

It is understood that some of the council’s fleet of collection bins are undergoing repairs, leaving a lack of wagons to make the collections.
