A swarm of “thousands” of bees saw people running for cover as a nest was moved from a hedge near a popular cycle route.

Cyclists and walkers were stopped from passing through a section of the route between Warwick University and Kenilworth, known as National Cycle Network 52, because the bees were directly over a pathway near Cryfield Grange Road.

Mark Taylor, who sometimes cycles on the path, said he witnessed a few people warning others to turn back from the walk because of the bees, on Saturday afternoon.

“One gentleman told me he was a beekeeper himself and said he would enlist the help of some other local beekeepers who he knew lived nearby,” said Mark, from Coventry.

“I was quite surprised to see two people arrive dressed in netted suits and I watched them remove a bees nest from a nearby hedge.

“It was quite a sight to see and hear so many bees flying around. Some bees suddenly flew towards me and some other onlookers as the nest was being moved. We quickly ran away.”

The nest was put onto a sheet and Mark assumed it was moved to a safer place.

He added: “It was a bit odd - a guy who I just happened to see said ‘I’m a beekeeper myself, I just alerted a couple of beekeepers who live locally’.

“He said ‘they’re coming out to attend to it now’.

“The whole experience was slightly frightening – the sight and sound of those bees directly over that path.”
