The Care Quality Commission had previously placed Minster Rest Home in special measures

A Coventry care home is to be stripped of its licence over a catalogue of long-running problems.

Minster Rest Home, in Earlsdon, is in the process of being de-registered by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) after a series of surprise inspections uncovered issues which led to the care home being branded “not safe” and “not caring”.

The care home had previously been rated as inadequate in 2013, but had gone on to make the necessary improvements by September 2014.

But those improvements had not been sustained and concerns over staff numbers, staff training, record keeping, health and safety procedures, risk assessments and resident comfort were all raised in a 24-page CQC report published in June.

That report resulted in the home being placed in “special measures” but adequate improvements have not been made since and the CQC has acted to swiftly close down the site which was home to 17 people - including some with mental health conditions.

Coventry City Council is in the process of rehoming residents and the home will now close its doors in the coming days after the last person is moved to another site. An estimated 10 jobs will be lost as a result of the closure.

Coventry care home found with 'nasty smelling' bedroom and stained bedding forced to close

A care home in Coventry which had a smelly bedroom, bedding with brown stains and a puddle of urine left on the bathroom floor to dry up has been forced to close.

Bosses at the Care Quality Commission have cancelled the registration of the Minster Rest Home at 18 Westminster Road, Earlsdon, Coventry.

The home is closed and the building up for sale.

The move comes after inspectors made three unannounced visits in spring this year. They set out their findings in a report declaring the home inadequate.

At the time of the visits there were 17 people living in the home with a range of health problems and disabilities including mental illnesses, diabetes, deafness and sight impairment. The home charged up to £440 a week for each resident.

The inspectors saw a staff member wheel a mobility aid through a puddle of urine on a toilet floor then out along a corridor.

The puddle of urine was left without being cleared up for so long it dried on to the toilet floor.

When the inspectors visited the bedrooms they found one of them smelt nasty and had a quilt with brown stains. Another had a stained pillow and a broken chest of drawers.

They found an electric heater on a shelf. The heater could have started a fire if it had fallen down.

Some residents told inspectors they liked the food. But one person said they had sent their plate of sausages and mash back because they were bored with having the same dish again and again.

Another said when sandwiches were served at tea time they were only given one slice of bread and were hungry all the time. Staff told inspectors there were no extra sandwiches for second helpings.

Another resident couldn’t finish dinner because staff were too busy to offer the help the resident needed.

Inspectors also found that staff shortages and a high turnover meant that staff didn’t have time to get to know residents.

Inspectors from the commission also visited in 2013. After that visit they said the home was failing to protect people’s safety and welfare.

Not long after the 2013 visit one of the owners, Dr Alvin Ribeiro, said they had put most of the matters right, promising a care home to be envious of.
