Thug blames girlfriend after sickening glass attack

Simon Elkington, who has a previous conviction for manslaughter, got his victim to blame strangers for the attack

A thug who lashed out at his girlfriend with a broken glass - damaging tendons in her hand as she tried to protect her face - blamed her for making him do it.

Simon Elkington, whose previous convictions included offences of manslaughter and wounding, then got his victim to go along with a story that she had been attacked by two unknown men.

But after he had been jailed for further assaults on her, the woman decided to go to the police and tell them what had really happened.

Elkington, aged 43, formerly of Stoke, Coventry, was jailed for 28 months after pleading guilty at Warwick Crown Court to maliciously wounding his victim.

Jailing Elkington, Judge Sylvia de Bertodano told him: “Your first instinct on causing this injury was to blame her by saying ‘Look what you made me do.’

“That kind of attitude makes it very difficult for women in controlling relationships like this to get away from them.

“It was not until three years later, when you were convicted of assaulting her and were safely locked away, that she had the confidence to tell the police what had happened.”
