Racist road rage incident filmed at Coventry retail park prompts police investigation

West Midlands Police said they are looking at the footage which shows a white woman being verbally abused by a Mercedes driver
Police are investigating after shocking video footage emerged which appears to show a driver hurling racist abuse at a white woman in a packed shopping centre car park.
The footage shows a man in a fit of rage as he confronts the woman while horrified families and young children watch from nearby.
It was filmed at Arena Shopping Park, Rowley’s Green, during a busy Sunday afternoon.
Eventually, passers-by and the driver’s passenger ushered him back into the vehicle as the woman shouts back: “Go and crash your car.”
The driver’s number plate and face are clearly visible in the original footage which police have now seen.
A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “We are aware of this video and we are looking in to it.”
An update on the investigation is expected in the next few days.
Brian Kavanagh, who was out shopping with his teenage son at the time, filmed the road rage incident.
He said the man had started hurling abuse at the woman after she had crossed the road slowly in front of the man’s Mercedes just moments before.
Mr Kavanagh said some people hid behind parked cars as the confrontation unfolded.
He said: “It was because an older lady was trying to cross the crossing. I was with my 14-year-old son getting a computer game.
“It’s scared my son, Luke, and he wanted to go home. My son asked me why that man was threatening to kill an old lady.
“It’s not what you would expect, especially when Coventry is such a multicultural city.
“What you don’t see in the video is the children and young mothers running away from it and grown men hiding behind cars.”
