Whitefriars plan for 83 new homes given the green light by council

Two blocks of flats in Canley are to be demolished and replaced with 83 new homes after the proposals were backed by planning bosses.

Housing association Whitefriars wants to create a mix of houses and flats at the site off Papenham Green and Donegal Close.

Some will be to rent, some shared ownership and some will be put on sale. There will also be garages and parking spaces.

Whitefriars will rehouse the people living in the two blocks due for demolition. Whitefriars bosses say the two blocks of flats are substandard.

A Whitefriars spokesman said: “To facilitate the redevelopment and continued regeneration of the Canley neighbourhood, two existing Whitefriars blocks of flats in Donegal Close will be demolished.

“Residents living in the blocks have been consulted with and the overwhelming response received was supportive of the proposals to redevelop the area.

“Officers are now working closely with residents in supporting them to find a new home, which includes making arrangements for the move.”

The development will cost £10million. Some of the money is coming from Whitefriars, some from a Homes and Communities Agency Social Housing Grant and some from selling the houses.

These are the first images of £10million plans to transform an area of Canley.

The project will see 83 homes built on a site off Pappenham Green and Donegal Close and will include a mix of homes for affordable rent, shared ownership and private sale.

Work on the Whitefriars Housing project is due to start this month with contractors Bouygues UK set to carry out the work.

The scheme will also look to bring a range of job, apprenticeship and training opportunities for people in the area.

Two old Whitefriars blocks of flats in Donegal Close will be demolished to make way for the new homes, which are being built as part of the ongoing regeneration of the Canley area.

Preparatory work has begun, with the demolition scheduled for later in November.

The new development is expected to be complete by summer 2018.

WORK has begun on 83 new affordable homes in Canley.

Two old blocks of flats on Donegal close will be demolished to make way for a new £10million development on land off Pappenham Green.

The development, being built by Whitefriars Housing, is the first to be built by the company in Coventry that will include a mix of homes for affordable rent, shared ownership and private sale.

Simon Kimberley, Deputy Chief Executive at Whitefriars Housing, said: “This significant investment in Canley will change the landscape of the local area and is a real milestone in the area’s ongoing regeneration.

“We are committed to providing more affordable housing in and around Coventry to ensure it is a place where people are proud to live and work, now and into the future.”

The development will include 48 homes for affordable rent – a mix of houses and flats with one to four bedrooms – plus 14 homes for shared ownership and 21 two and three-bedroom houses for outright sale.

Craig Tatton, chief operating officer at contractor Bouygues UK, added: “We are pleased to be delivering these home for the residents of Canley and the surrounding areas.

“We are providing new homes for over 100 families in Coventry and with this we aim to bring training and employment opportunities through our National Skills Academy for Construction, working in partnership with local training providers and our supply chain.”

The homes are expected to be complete by summer 2018.

Welcoming the news, Coun Linda Bigham, cabinet member for community development, said: “It’s fantastic to see that there will soon be new homes available, especially with the range of options available to people.

“It will really make a difference to the city and the Canley area.”
