A dog owner has been left devastated after her elderly Jack Russell was savagely attacked while on an afternoon walk in Wyken.

Eagle, aged 17, was so badly injured that he had to be put down just a few hours after the attack.

Owner Jane Neenan, 49, had only just left her house on April 23, and started walking down the street when she heard a commotion in the distance.

Jane, a civil servant, said: “We had only just left the house for a walk and I heard shouting, as if it was a warning.

“But then all I knew what had happened was a dog had rushed up and ran towards us, making a beeline for Eagle.

“It was completely out of control, and the women who was with him was trying to call him back because he wasn’t on a lead. They had no control over him.

“He went straight for Eagle and I tried to get him out the way but I didn’t even have time to pick him up because the dog was there.

“The women rushed up and tried to pull him back by his collar, but it was too late. He had got Eagle by the throat.”

Throughout the ordeal Jane was shouting for the dog to get off Eagle, but she couldn’t get him off.

Jane said: “It took two people to get the dog off Eagle and after that all I saw was him lying on the floor. I thought he was dead.”

Jane carried Eagle back to the house and contacted the emergency vet, who said they needed to operate on him right away.

Jane said: “Eagle had a massive open gash on the left side of his neck, which was so close to the artery and windpipe he would have to be operated on.

“I was sent home while they did blood tests but was called back almost straight away to be told he was not in a fit state to be operated on.”

The vet had told Jane it would be unethical to operate on Eagle as he just would not survive the surgery.

She said: “I lost my best friend that day because of them and their dog.

“I’ve not had much sleep, it’s just a nightmare because I can’t focus on anything.”

Jane has since been to the police, the dog warden and her local MP to try and find the dog and it’s owners.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “This was reported to us on 24 February. We visited the woman at her home to discuss what had happened and she reassured us that she did not feel at risk from the dog while the attack took place.

“There is no legislation that covers dog on dog attacks and, as there has been no report of the dog being dangerously out of control in a public place, we have no power to take any further action at this time.

“Local neighbourhood officers have been made aware of the incident and will be patrolling the area to offer reassurance.”

It's by no means the first time a dog on dog attack has ended in tragedy in Coventry recently, with David Nicholls' terrier cross Toby dying last month.

Some sort of description of dog and owners might actually be useful?

Aren't dogs now supposed to be kept on a lead on the street? I know I wouldn't even consider letting mine off his lead.

That is a sad ending for Eagle, such a shame. Though he did have a fairly good long doggy life.
There ought to be some kind of by-law for dogs to be on a lead when out and about.
