Four-car shunt causes ring road tailbacks

A collision involving two cars and two vans brought part of Coventry’s ring road to a standstill on Wednesday night.

The four-vehicle shunt happened shortly after 7pm between the Canal Basin footbridge and Foleshill Road .

The collision involved a Ford Fiesta, a Seat Leon, a Vauxhall Combi van and a Mazda Maxi van.

The circumstances of the collision are not known but all four vehicles collided with each other.

All the vehicles involved sustained some damage though for the most part it was minor.

No one was believed to have been injured in the incident.

The drivers of the vehicles remained where they were in the middle carriageway of the ring road to exchange details.

That led to tailbacks stretching back to the Holyhead Road junction as vehicles attempted to manoeuvre around the parked cars and vans.

Two police cars arrived on the scene around fifteen minutes after the incident and boxed off the vehicles involved in the collision.

They then instructed them to move off the ring road to continue exchanging details and the drivers involved then moved to the pay and display car park on Leicester Row.

Police took a number of statements from those involved.

One bystander who was in Leicester Row at the time told the Telegraph: “I just heard and almighty noise and looked around to see two vans and two cars had collided.

“Fortunately no one seemed to be hurt but it cause a few problems on the ring road, given where it happened.

“Mind you, it would have been complete chaos if it had happened at the height of the rush hour.”
