Coventry's ring road will welcome a new style of driving this summer in the form of racing trucks – organisers of the Coventry Motofest have announced.

Taking place over the weekend starting Saturday (June 4), the ring road will be home to 1,000 horsepower, five tonne, trucks – drawn from the British Truck Racing Championship (BTRC) race series.

The move comes following Coventry Motofest’s new partnership with Donington Park circuit.

The partnership between the two organisations will see the East Midlands based circuit bring a range of content from their 2016 events calendar and race series to run on the Motofest track during this year’s festival.

There will be a range of automotive activities taking place from pop-up racing and demonstration events to static displays and fringe events.

Among the drivers taking part in the unique ring road race are ten-times BTRC champion Stuart Oliver, championship regular Steve Thomas and BTRC 2011 and 2015 Division Two champion Steve Powell.

Stuart Oliver, director of truck sport promotions, said: “We are looking forward to bringing along a selection of 1,000 BHP Race Trucks to entertain those attending the British Truck Racing Championship.

“The racing trucks are true heavyweights of motor sport and we aim to put on a big show at the Coventry Motofest event.”

Darren Langeveld, Coventry Motofest race director, said: “Racing trucks make for some of the most spectacular sights in British motorsport, with burning rubber and powerslides a common sight.

“They are certainly nothing like the trucks you might casually overtake on a motorway or the ring road.

“With some of the best drivers from the BTRA series confirmed to take part, the racing trucks are set to be a real crowd pleaser and another great addition to the overall spectacle of the festival.”

My personal thoughts are that the ring-road is unsuitable for this.

Coventry Motofest to open a second circuit for this year's event

A second circuit is set to open at this year’s Coventry Motofest.

The new short oval track will run from Moat Street car park up to junction 7 of the ring road.

It will play host to motoring mayhem of all kinds from drift cars to Gymkhana cars.

One of the headline acts for the new short track oval are 12 cars from the UK Formula G Championship.

In Gymkhana racing, drivers must navigate their way around a series of obstacles from monster truck tyres, to slaloms and washing machines.

They must memorise the track layout to beat the course and their opponent in the fastest time possible.

Darren Langeveld, Coventry Motofest race director, said: “Coventry Motofest has doubled the fun as we now have not just one but two circuits for this year’s event.

“As we keep saying the Coventry Motofest event just gets bigger and better each year and we look forward to putting on an exciting show to celebrate Coventry’s motoring heritage.”

The two day festival will run from June 4 to June 5 with additional launch events taking place on June 3.
