Karen Ross’ eight-year-old cat Pongo was found hanging from a fence at Caludon Park near the family’s home in Farren Road, Wyken.

The lovable moggy was suspended by a metal trap and chain that was attached to her left back leg.

Ms Ross thought Pongo had also been clubbed round the head after blood was found coming from her ear.

The RSPCA said the cat must have been in “terrible pain” before she died.

Ms Ross said: “We thought that she had somehow got the trap on her foot and while trying to get home got caught on the fence.

“The vet thought that someone had trapped her and hit her over the head to kill her and then hung her on the fence.”

Ms Ross added: “Thankfully I found her and not one of my children or a child playing in the park.”

The case was referred to the RSPCA but Ms Ross feared that nothing could be done since she had no idea who would want to attack Pongo.

After being contacted by Your Vet in Tile Hill, RSPCA inspectors launched an investigation.

RSPCA inspector Helen Smith said: “This cat must have been in terrible pain before she died.

“We have no idea why this trap was set, but a well loved family pet has been injured and died.”

The RSPCA have also issued a warning to people who use metal traps to catch pests, such as rats, as they can harm pets and other wildlife.

Helen said: “These traps are extremely dangerous.

“It is important that people are aware of the damage these traps can do.

“The injuries caused by these kind of contraptions are often fatal.

She added: “We advise that these are set only by qualified pest controllers and that they should always be used responsibly and within the law.”

The attack on Pongo is the latest in a series of crimes against animals in the Coventry and Warwickshire area - some of which result in criminal charges.

If anyone has any information about who may have left the trap, call the RSPCA in complete confidence on 0300 123 8018.
