More than 21,000 complaints about missed bin collections have been lodged with Coventry City Council in the past 18 months.

A Freedom of Information request revealed that between April 2014 and October this year, 21,390 complaints were received by the council.

Taking into account four collections a week, that means on average 66 waste, recycling and garden bins are left unemptied by council workers each day.

When asked by the Telegraph why so many bins had not been collected, the city council said it only represented a very small fraction of the total emptied each year.

A spokesman said: “We empty approximately 240,000 bins a week, around 12.2 million a year, and while we make every effort to collect all bins that have been put out for collection, they are sometimes missed.

“This can be for a number of reasons such as access problems for the lorry if the road has been blocked by other vehicles, the wrong bin being put out, bins being put out on the wrong day or bins being contaminated with the wrong waste, particularly on recycling rounds.

“We aim to return and pick up missed bins at the earliest opportunity and we would encourage people to report them to us.”
