A poor feline was saved by Warwickshire vets after being found doused in diesel.

The cat named Honey - who lives in Harbury - was rushed to the veterinary clinic at Avonvale after returning home stinking of diesel oil.

The pet owner, Andrea Mann, was concerned with 8-year-old Honey potentially poisoning herself in an attempt to clean off the liquid and rushed her to the Warwick practice as a result.

Vet Mark Taylor told the Telegraph: "Honey returned home in the middle of the night and her owners smelt a strong, overpowering smell from her coating.

"It was only upon further inspection that they realised it was diesel and they rushed her down to the hospital where we met them.

"We spent the early hours cleaning and washing her."

Honey was taken in at around 5am, before the vets checked for liver damage two days later and any potential health concerns which may have been triggered by toxins existing within the liquid.

Diesel oil is toxic, and would have had the potential to be lethal if it had managed to get inside Honey's body.

It is thought that the diesel may have come from a farm, or at a nearby railway where work was being conducted by maintenance staff.

Owner Andrea, and her flatmate, acted swiftly by wrapping the rescue cat in a towel as to not allow her to lick herself.

Taylor admitted Honey had been rushed in just in time.

He said: "She has completely recovered."
