Two gunmen attempted to rob a Coventry shop, prompting a police appeal for witnesses.The incident happened at Windmill Road Stores, in Longford, at 2151 BST on Thursday, said West Midlands Police.
Two men entered the store armed with handguns and a baseball bat and demanded the contents of the till.
The owner pressed the store's panic button and was struck over the head with a handgun and the bat but the men fled empty-handed.
Silver handgunThe first offender was a white male, approximately 5ft 9in (1.75m) tall and wearing a blue hooded top.
He wore a black foam mask similar to those worn by cyclists, a black baseball cap, black tracksuit bottoms and carried a black handgun.
The second offender was a white male wearing a dark hooded top and carrying a silver handgun.
A police spokesman said: "This was a very serious incident where the victim needed hospital treatment for a head injury which could have been fatal."
