Two gunmen attempted to rob a Coventry shop, prompting a police appeal for witnesses.

The incident happened at Windmill Road Stores, in Longford, at 2151 BST on Thursday, said West Midlands Police.

Two men entered the store armed with handguns and a baseball bat and demanded the contents of the till.

The owner pressed the store's panic button and was struck over the head with a handgun and the bat but the men fled empty-handed.

Silver handgun

The first offender was a white male, approximately 5ft 9in (1.75m) tall and wearing a blue hooded top.

He wore a black foam mask similar to those worn by cyclists, a black baseball cap, black tracksuit bottoms and carried a black handgun.

The second offender was a white male wearing a dark hooded top and carrying a silver handgun.

A police spokesman said: "This was a very serious incident where the victim needed hospital treatment for a head injury which could have been fatal."
