Call to axe high charges on the borough's poorest

A charge on the most poor in Nuneaton and Bedworth should be reduced.

A motion will be made at Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council's last full council meeting of the year to slash the amount of Council Tax that the most deprived households have to pay.

In April of this year, the current Council Tax Benefit was abolished, leaving everyone in the borough, except pensioners, being made to pay 20 per cent of their Council Tax before any benefits are deducted.

But Green Party councillor Keith Kondakor believes that the 20 per cent requirement rate is too high.

In fact, he claims that it is the highest in the county.

He says that it is for this reason that he will be proposing at the meeting on Wednesday that the figure is cut to 17 per cent.

"This is the fault of the austerity of the Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition but we require 20 per cent, which is the highest requirement in Warwickshire," Cllr Kondakor said.

He has also questioned the hardship fund that the council set-up to help those who now have to pay Council Tax.

He said that only £11,500 of the £200,000 pot set aside to help those has been spent: "We have chosen to raise money from the people who are in hardship, yet we only give ten per cent of it out to help," he said.

"It is madness. You would be better playing the lottery than trying to get the council hardship fund. I think we should reduce our requirement 17 per cent. At the minute we are robbing from the poorest in our society."

Prior to the changes being brought in, the ruling Labour councillors at the Town Hall condemned the government system.

The last full council meeting of the year will be held on Wednesday night at 6pm in the council chamber at the Town Hall.
