Teenager charged with murder after OAP's death in Foleshill

A teenager has been charged with murder after a 72-year-old man died in a street attack in Foleshill.

Coventry pensioner Andy Pratt died last August after he was attacked in Bright Street, near his home, in May.

He suffered severe head injuries and was taken to University Hospital, Walsgrave.

Mr Pratt never fully recovered from his injuries though and died on August 8.

His funeral was held at Canley Crematorium in October.

Omair Zaman, aged 19, of Eld Road, Foleshill, was originally arrested on suspicion of wounding in May and released on police bail.

The shop worker was rearrested today and charged with murder.

Zaman will appear at Coventry Magistrates Court tomorrow.

Teenager jailed for street attack that killed pensioner

This is the first picture of a teenager sent to prison for three and a half years for attacking and killing a pensioner as he walked home from the pub.

Omair Zaman, 19, punched and kicked Andy Pratt to the floor near to his home in Bright Street, Foleshill , back in May.

Mr Pratt, 72, suffered severe head injuries and was taken to University Hospital in Coventry.

He never fully recovered from his injuries and died on August 8.

Shop worker Zaman of Eld Road, Foleshill, was originally arrested on suspicion of wounding in May and that was then upgraded to murder after Mr Pratt’s death.

However, no evidence was given on that charge at Warwick Crown Court and he instead pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Zaman was sentenced on Wednesday morning to 42 months in prison.

Detective Sergeant Michelle Kiedron said: “Andrew was walking home from his local pub when Zaman punched and kicked him in an unprovoked attack.

“Neighbours came to Andrew’s aid and he was taken to hospital - he never left hospital again and died of his injuries a few months later.

“We accept the court’s decision and hope that the jailing of this dangerous man offers some comfort to Andrew’s family.”
