Police received a 999 call at 12.40am today after neighbours heard shots being fired in Acorn Street, Stoke Aldermoor.

Officers raced to the scene and found a man injured in the street.

The 25-year-old man was taken to University Hospital, in Walsgrave, where he was treated for the wound. He remains in hospital in a stable condition.

Police cordoned off part of Acorn Street as they launched an investigation into the shooting.

The road was still shut off between Pinley Fields and the nearby cul-de-sac late yesterday afternoon, with officers guarding the scene and directing traffic away from the area.

Clothes and blankets could still be seen within the police cordon.

Neighbours nearby said they had heard several gunshots with one person claiming that the 25-year-old had been shot “two or three times” and was lucky to be alive.

Another resident, who didn’t want to be named, said: “To be honest I wasn’t sure what was going on, whether it was a car backfiring or not.

“Obviously when I saw the police and paramedics I realised what had happened – they were everywhere.

“It’s not something you expect to see happening outside your front door.”

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said they were alerted to the incident at 12.40am by the police.

A spokesman said: “We sent one ambulance crew to the incident as well as an area support officer in a rapid response vehicle.

“One man was taken to hospital.”

Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

Call Coventry Police on 101 if you can help.
