Four men have been arrested after a bungled robbery at a Coventry supermarket.
Police were called to the Asda store in Jubilee Crescent, Radford, at 10.52pm last night to reports of a robbery in progress.
Four men barged inside and demanded cash - but police were alerted and arrived within minutes.
While officers were on the way to the supermarket the would-be robbers threatened staff, before assaulting two men and a woman.
Despite the attacks the robbers left the store empty handed and got into an Audi A4 parked nearby.
But as they tried to escape they crashed the vehicle into police car. The Audi was found abandoned in Burnaby Road.
No-one was hurt in the collision but shortly afterwards the four men were arrested by police.
The suspects, aged 27, 21, 20 and 19, were taken into custody on Thursday night before being questioned by officers today.
The four men were still in custody this afternoon.
The police helicopter was sent out to try and track the robbers if they managed to escape, leading to rumours that the gang had been armed.
Police dismissed that rumour, while staff at the store took to Facebook to explain what had happened.
One wrote: “Security is tight. They beat up two males and one female. Robbers are in custody right now.
“There was no armed police. Four guys tried to rob the store and got caught by police on leaving.”
A witness wrote: “All the cameras in that shop, what were they thinking? Plus cash gets taken from the tills every hour.
“They only got to Burnaby Road. Don’t know how many are loose but sure I saw the police putting one in one of their cars.”
