England manager Roy Hodgson insists he will not resign, despite his side facing World Cup elimination.

Luis Suarez's double for Uruguay condemned England to their second successive defeat in Group D following an opening loss to Italy.

If Italy fail to beat Costa Rica on Friday, then England are out.

"I don't have any intention to resign," said Hodgson, 66. "I've been really happy with the way the players have responded to the work we've done."

The Football Association appointed Hodgson shortly before Euro 2012, following Fabio Capello's shock decision to quit.

England reached the quarter-finals at the European Championship in Poland and Ukraine, losing on penalties to Italy, but they were unbeaten as they qualified for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

"I'm bitterly disappointed, of course, but I don't feel I need to resign, no," added Hodgson. "On the other hand, if the FA think I'm not the right man to do the job, that will be their decision not mine."

He can only work with the raw material he's got.

Perhaps next time he ought get along to the Sunday leagues; I'm sure he'll find plenty of decent players that are capable of playing together as a team, rather than that assortment of prima donnas he's using at present.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

Roy Hodgson 'will remain England boss'

Roy Hodgson will remain as England manager until 2016, says Football Association chairman Greg Dyke.

After losing their first two matches, England were knocked out of the World Cup when Italy lost 1-0 to Costa Rica.

Speaking before the team's elimination was confirmed, Dyke said: "We are supportive of Roy. I already see people asking the question, 'Will he stay?' The answer is yes.

"He came to do a four-year cycle leading up to Euro 2016."

Hodgson was appointed shortly before Euro 2012 following Fabio Capello's shock decision to quit.

Dyke acknowledged it was "disappointing" England had lost 2-1 to both Italy and Uruguay, but said there were "some positives".

He added: "There are a lot of young players who got blooded here and got into tournament football."
