The incident occurred in Middlemarch Road in the town, with a number of 999 calls received at shortly before 1.40am.

The fire started in a caravan which was parked outside the address and soon spread to a car, believed to be a Focus estate, before setting the home alight.

The woman and young boy were taken to hospital by ambulance suffering from smoke inhalation.

Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service sent crews from Nuneaton and Bedworth to the scene.

Officers were there for almost two hours extinguishing the flames and making the area safe.

A spokesman for Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service Control said: “Fire crews from Nuneaton and Bedworth dealt with a house fire in the early hours of the morning in Middlemarch Road following several calls received at 1.38am.

“A fire involving a car and caravan on the driveway set the house on fire. Two occupants, a mother and child, were rescued from a first floor window by fire crews and taken to hospital via county ambulance suffering from smoke inhalation.”

The cause of the fire is currently being investigated. The car and caravan were completely destroyed in the incident.

The home suffered smoke damage, with the kitchen of the property particularly affected.

A fire which trapped a mother and her toddler son in an upstairs bedroom at their Nuneaton home is being treated as suspicious.

The blaze broke out in a caravan and a nearby parked car in the early hours last Friday and quickly spread to the semi-detached house in Middlemarch Road, on the Hill Top estate.

Fire crews had to rescue the only two occupants, a woman and her five-year-old son, who were trapped by thick swirling smoke and had to climb out of a front bedroom window.

Police are appealing for any witnesses in the area between 1am and 1.45am and who may have seen anything suspicious.

Contact Annemarie Wale at Nuneaton CID on 101, ext 3105 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
