The emergency response included six ambulances and the Midland Air Ambulance.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "A man in his 20s who was one of the lorry drivers was trapped in his cab.

"He was freed with the help of the fire service. He had a broken leg, a broken wrist and a suspected fractured pelvis and was taken to University Hospital Coventry.

"Two women who were in the two cars involved in the collision were both taken to the same hospital with minor injuries.

“The other lorry driver was unhurt.”

The southbound side is still closed, with traffic either diverting up the northbound A444 towards Nuneaton and then the A5 towards Rugby to rejoin at J1, or the southbound A444 towards Coventry to join the A428 at Binley and the A46 to rejoin at J2.

Neil Taylor, duty operations manager for the Highways Agency, said: "Traffic trapped between the closure at junction three and the scene of the incident is also being turned around to follow the diversion.

"It is queuing for just over ten miles in both directions and motorists can expect delays of approximately 50 minutes.

“Road users are advised to plan their journeys, leaving extra time, as delays are likely to be ongoing for some time.”
