Armson rescues point for Nuneaton Town away at Alfreton Town

A LATE goal from James Armson earned Nuneaton a point this afternoon.

The home side went into the game in the better form, and so it showed, as the first three minutes was all Alfreton.

They should have taken the lead in this time but Shaun Harrad could only blast the ball against the bar from six yards out. Somehow finding the angle of post and bar with the goal gaping.

The Boro reacted well to the onslaught and were soon asking a few questions of their own. Dave Hibbert missing the best of them.

The big frontman was found by a superb cutback from Theo Streete, Hibbert only finding Jon Worsnop though when unmarked in the six yard box.

The Boro were made to pay for that missed chance as Alfreton were ahead just six minutes later.

A through ball from Bradley Wood found Job Ayo Akinde on his own with the goal in front of him. The Reds forward took the most of the chance by sliding it past James Belshaw and into the back of the net.

Neither side could claim they were on top after the goal as the game became a scrappy one leading up the break.

After the restart the Boro had their tails up, though, as the visitors started knocking the ball around with a pace and a purpose that was missing in the first half.

New boss, Mark Noon, brought on Louis Moult for Wes York as he switched from a 4-4-2 to a diamond formation in the middle of the pitch, but still the Alfreton rear guard held strong.

The only save of note Worsnop had to save in the first 20 minutes of the second half was a long distance effort from Danny Sleath that the keeper got done comfortably and pushed wide.

The Boro were seeing plenty of the ball but frustratingly for the 137 away fans, they were not testing the home keeper enough.

Even those shots that looked like they could be dangerous, like the one from Louis Moult with five minutes to go, hit a deflection and sailed wide as the home side had luck as well as a resolute defence on their side.

That all changed with six minutes to go, though, as James Armson drilled Nuneaton Town right back into the play-off race.

The England C man was in the right place at the right time as a corner was not cleared by the home side, Armson taking advantage of that by drilling home the equaliser from ten yards out.
