Man shot in the face on his way to work in Keresley

A builder was shot in the face at point-blank range as he made his way to work in Keresley Village this morning.

Robert Cummings, a 32-year-old father of a young son, survived the attack but is being treated in hospital for serious injuries to his chin.

Police launched an attempted murder investigation and made an appeal for any information which may lead them to the masked gun man.

The drama happened shortly after 9am when Mr Cummings was a passenger in a car which stopped near the convenience store at the junction of Somers Road and Charity Road.

A family member told the Telegraph: “A man, with the lower half of his face covered, walked over to the car, pulled out a knife and a handgun.

“He fired one shot through the open window straight at Rob, whose mate immediately slammed the car into reverse and then raced to hospital.

“Doctors have told us that Rob’s injuries are not life threatening but, obviously, the family is in a state of shock. We haven’t got a clue why such a thing should happen.”

Mr Cummings was initially taken to George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton and then transferred to University Hospitals, Coventry and Warwickshire.

Brought up in the village, he lives with his girl friend and three-year-old son not far from the scene of the shooting. He and his mate were due to start a brick-laying job at a nearby house.

A fellow builder said: “Rob was doing some work with me last week. He is a nice, quiet lad and not the sort to be mixed up in any sort of trouble. I cannot think of why anyone would want to do him any harm.”

It is not known whether the attacker arrived or left the area on foot or by car.

Police sealed off part of Somers Road to carry out forensic tests and made an appeal for anyone with information about the incident to call them 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or at http://www.crimestoppers-uk.org.

Man cleared of attempted murder in Keresley

The man accused of shooting a builder in the face as he sat in a car in the north Warwickshire village where they both lived has been cleared of attempted murder.

The dramatic end to Scott Moore’s trial at Warwick Crown Court in Leamington today came following submissions by his barrister Antonie Muller at the end of prosecution arguments that he had no case to answer.

And Judge Richard Griffith-Jones ruled that evidence of identification by victim Robert Cummings was insufficient for the trial to continue in the absence of other evidence to support it.

Moore, aged 23, of Old Winnings Road, Keresley, had denied charges of attempted murder and possessing a firearm with intent to commit murder.

And after giving the prosecution 24 hours to decide whether to challenge the ruling, Judge Griffith-Jones directed the jury to enter not guilty verdicts on both charges.
