A woman became trapped between two cars when they were struck by another vehicle in a suspected hit-and-run crash.

The driver of the third car left the scene - a private driveway - before ambulances arrived, police said.

Purcell Road in Wood End, Coventry, was closed from 08:30 GMT for two hours.

The 46-year-old woman was taken to hospital with leg injuries but her condition is not thought to be life-threatening.

A woman is lucky to be alive after being crushed in a hit-and-run accident - as she cleaned her car on her driveway.

Elena Berek was washing her car on Sunday morning when a Volkswagen Golf ploughed through a brick wall at her Coventry home.

It smashed into two parked cars, leaving her trapped in between with serious injuries.

The driver of the black battered VW Golf tried to drive off from the scene in Purcell Road, Courthouse Green, before running away from the scene and leaving the car in the street.

The dramatic scenes unfolded at 8.30am as Elena, 46, was cleaning her beloved Chrysler Crossfire before a trip to visit her mum.

The peaceful silence was broken by the sound of the crash as a car came flying around a left-hand bend in the road and straight towards the house.

Elena’s partner Maggie Wilshire, who was inside at the time, said: “I was doing the ironing when I heard this almighty explosion.

“Then all I could hear was Elena screaming my name and then there were bricks flying across the front of the window.

“I ran outside and it was carnage - she was pinned between the two cars.

“I ran straight back inside to call 999 and then there were just people everywhere and they were all amazing.

“The police and ambulance arrived within minutes and it was such a fantastic response.

“Someone was saying that a neighbour further down the road heard her scream, so the driver must have heard it as well. He tried to drive off and to do that is just shocking.”

Maggie, 59, revealed that Elena has been left with three broken bones in one leg and her pelvis has been shattered in three places on the other side.

Doctors were hoping to take her in to theatre for surgery yesterday and Maggie added that although “she was in a lot of pain, but her spirit is good”.

Among those who rushed to the scene was Elena’s brother, Tony, who was on the phone to her exactly when the terrifying incident happened.

He said: “She was on the phone to me and I heard her screams.

“The Golf had come up Purcell Road at high speed - it must have been about 70mph for the sort of damage it has done.

“My sister was just getting in to her car when the Golf came up on to the grass verge, through the brick wall and smashed in to her car.

“She was stuck in the middle between her car and her partner’s car.

“The lad in the Golf reversed and tried to drive off, but it was that badly damaged he couldn’t so he just ran off.

“I don’t think it’s hit yet how serious it is or how more serious it could have been. If it wasn’t for the brick wall she could be dead.”

The brother and sister both work for Redwing Environmental Limited, based in Atherstone, and Tony says that Elena has been told she could be off work for nine months.

Anyone with information is urged to call police on 101.

What's the point of him running off? The owner of the VW will be traced in any case and my guess is the driver had no proper licence or insurance.
