Multiple 999 calls were made from Ansty Road, Wyken, at around 10.20pm last night following the crash between a black Peugeot 206 and a black Volkswagen Scirroco.

Officers raced to the scene and were joined by a passing ambulance which had stopped to help the injured.

Both drivers were taken to hospital, but the driver of the Peugeot, a 27-year-old local man, died as a result of his injuries.

A woman, who was a passenger in the Peugeot, was also taken to hospital.

The driver of the Volkswagen, a 25-year-old man from Eastern Green, was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in police custody this morning.

A number of homes on the busy road were damaged in the collision after the Peugeot collided with the houses.

Ansty Road was closed for around five hours at the junction of Hocking Road and at Aludon Park Avenue while collision investigators examined the scene.

Sergeant Tim Rogers, from the force's collision investigation unit, said: "This was a significant car crash which has sadly claimed the life of a young man.

"Our thoughts are with those affected by the incident and our priority now is establishing precisely what caused the cars to collide.

"Our investigation is well underway and we have already spoken to a number of witnesses and obtained a significant amount of information from enquiries at the scene. I would still encourage people who have not yet spoken with us to get in touch."

Any witnesses to the collision can call Sgt Rogers on 101.

Wyken couple's lucky escape after tyre from road crash shatters front room window

A couple have spoken of the terrifying moment they were showered with glass as a tyre from last night’s fatal crash in Wyken smashed their front window.

Colin and Debbie Weaver were watching TV at their home in Ansty Road when the quiet night was shattered by the sounds of the collision.

Despite living about 100 yards from where the crash happened, a tyre had then flown off one of the cars and crashed in to their living room window.

Neither Colin or Debbie were hurt, although things could have been a lot worse as 54-year-old Colin had only moved out of the chair directly below the window, which took the brunt of the incoming glass, two minutes earlier.

Colin said: “Debbie heard this big bang and as she got up to see what was happening the window just exploded.

“She started screaming and our daughter came running down the stairs as well as I ran outside.

“As I went out a cyclist came running over and said there’s been a bad smash and that it was a wheel that just hit our window. He said it just missed his head as he went by.

“It looked like carnage outside and we both ran over to the cars. There was a crowd and then the ambulance was there.

“The police said it looked like a bad one and later we learnt that the driver had passed away, so we were sorry about that.”

Debbie, 51, said: “We were really lucky as Colin had been sitting in the seat in the window and had only moved about two minutes before. Another tyre had gone bouncing even further down the road as well.

“The crash looked awful and the police had cordoned off the whole of the road.”

Debbie revealed that this was the latest in a handful of accidents on the stretch of road and added: “There is going to have to be something done with the road - whether that’s speed bumps or speed cameras or something else I don’t know.”
