Leamington Spa pensioner badly beaten in aggravated burglary

Postby dutchman » Tue Sep 17, 2013 3:45 pm

A 91-year old man is receiving treatment for serious head injuries after being "badly beaten" in an aggravated burglary in Warwickshire.

He was found unconscious by relatives at his home in Gordon Street, Leamington Spa on Monday.

Warwickshire Police said they did not know long he had been lying injured in the house, which had been "ransacked".

Det Chief Insp James Essex said: "This was a vicious attack on an elderly man who lived alone."

The pensioner is receiving treatment in the intensive care unit at the University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire.

Mr Essex said: "We would like to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious or out of the ordinary in Gordon Street, Leamington between Friday 13 September and noon on Monday 16 September.

"One of the key questions we need an answer to is how long the front door of the man's home had been ajar for and we would like to hear from anyone who noticed this."

Extra patrols have been deployed in the area and house to house enquiries are being carried out, police said.

A 38-year-old man who was arrested in the early hours of Monday for an unrelated offence, is being interviewed in relation to this incident, police said.

Sydney Pavier, 91, dies after being attacked in his Leamington Spa home

An elderly man has died in hospital two months after being attacked in his home in Warwickshire.

Relatives found Sydney Pavier, 91, unconscious at his Gordon Street home in Leamington Spa on 16 September.

The house had been ransacked and the front door was slightly ajar. Mr Pavier was taken to hospital where he died on Monday, police said.

Scott Melville, of no fixed address, was charged with burglary and causing grievous bodily harm on 19 September.

The 38-year-old was remanded in custody to appear before Warwick Crown Court at a date yet to be set.

'Never recovered'

Det Ch Insp James Essex, who is leading the investigation, said it was with "great sadness that we learned of Mr Pavier's death".

"He was a very elderly man who lived alone and had maintained his independence right up until he was viciously attacked.

"Sadly, he never recovered from his injuries."

He said police still wanted to hear from anyone who may have information about what happened at Mr Pavier's home.

"We know that his front door was found ajar when his relatives visited him and we would like to find out how long the door had been partially open for," he said.

Man found guilty of murder after breaking into 91-year-old's home

A burglar who attacked a 91-year-old man during a break-in has been found guilty of his murder.

Scott Melville, aged 38, was given a mandatory life sentence and told he would serve at least 26 years before being considered for parole.

Jurors today found that he had killed Sydney Pavier.

Mr Pavier was found with serious injuries by relatives who called at his ransacked house in Gordon Street, Leamington, on September 16 last year.

He was taken to Coventry’s University Hospital where he died from his injuries weeks later.

Melville had admitted a charge of burglary and robbery, but denied murder.
