Work is set to start on improvement works that will better connect the Transport Museum and Trinity Street with the work completed in Broadgate, as well as work underway in High Street.
The improvements will enable easier access between many of the city centre's key areas as well as creating a safer and more pleasant environment for all users and visitors to Trinity Street.
Central to the work is changing the way buses stop to pick up and drop off passengers. The five large bus shelters will be removed - making way for new, smaller ones that will be aligned in a saw tooth arrangement - enabling better access for buses and easier use for people.
In addition to this, the pavement on the opposite side of the Trinity Street bus shelters will be widened to incorporate trees, disabled parking bays and a loading bay. The bus stop at the rear of Primark will become a pick-up and drop off stop.
A zebra crossing will be installed near Sainsbury's supermarket to enable the safer crossing of pedestrians.
Cllr Rachel Lancaster, Cabinet member for Public Services said: "I am delighted that we are starting work in Trinity Street. It will dramatically improve one of the key routes in and out of the city for public transport. It will make the city centre easier to access and safer for all users.
"The work will better connect some of the key areas that have already been improved, such as Broadgate and High Street. And we will create additional disabled parking spaces.
"We have also been mindful of Christmas and will stop work over December to avoid disruption to Christmas shoppers and visitors to the city centre. Phase two will begin in January and focus on the improvements to Trinity Street. "
The first phase of the improvement works will begin on Monday 9 September and is expected to take approximately ten weeks.
