A replacement main library, a new hotel, plus offices and shops, are included in a planned development for Nuneaton town centre.

The plan is to transform the area around Vicarage Street - opposite the Warwickshire Justice Centre - which will mean demolishing the 1960s’ building which currently houses the library.

Cabinet members for the borough and county councils have approved the winning tender, paving the way for detailed discussions to take place with the preferred developer, whose identity has not yet been revealed.

The project will also incorporate a library information centre, retail space and car parking and is in addition to a proposal to re-develop a site at the top of Abbey Street, on the opposite side of the town centre.

Coun Dennis Harvey, leader of the borough council, said the plan for Vicarage Street would create jobs, increase footfall and boost existing businesses.

He added: “We are now one step closer to seeing these positive changes brought to Nuneaton town centre and this news reinforces our commitment to seeing this project delivered.”

County council deputy leader Alan Cockburn said: “This is a once in a generation opportunity for Nuneaton town centre and we believe this development will deliver future prosperity to the area.

“It has been a long process to get to this stage, but we have finally been able to agree a scheme which will bring much needed regeneration and job creation to the area.”
