And there was a party atmosphere in Broadgate yesterday as the first crop of youngsters and their parents had a go.

Children and adults can try it out from noon to 5pm each day until Sunday.

Skating boots are available for £3.50 an hour, or £3 for a family of four.

Heath Stone, of Sk8house, which runs the rink, said: “Once again it’s an honour to be supplying the roller rink within my home town of Coventry.

“Accommodating over 300 participants every day, the rink provides a great facility for families and children to enjoy.”

The idea came from the city centre’s marketing group as a way of encouraging families to spend more time in the city centre over the summer.

Grandmother Chris Starling of Eastern Green, whose three grandchildren had taken to the rink, said: “They did it last year and enjoyed it.

“It’s something a bit different.”
