Quarry plan finally gets the go ahead

Controversial plans for a quarry between Ryton and Wolston have been approved.



The decision to allow Oxfordshire-based Smiths Concrete permission for the 210 acre quarry was made by Warwickshire County Council on Tuesday.

Ryton councillor Howard Roberts said: "This application offers nothing but downsides for the residents and business that neighbour it.

"Approval will harm local highways, increase noise pollution and could impact on the excellent Ryton Organic Gardens."

Plans for a quarry were first rejected back in 1991 and were no back on the table until 2007. They were withdrawn the following year - the day before the council was due to refuse permission.

Around a million tonnes of sand and gravel is expected to be quarried from land at Wolston Fields Farm over six years. It will then be proccessed at the nearby Bubbenhall Quarry.

After that time the land must be restored to its current use.

But residents fear in the meantime it will ruin the landscape, and create traffic and dust problems.
