The crew of HMS Diamond are to get the Freedom of the City.
The Royal Navy's Type 45 Destroyer has been affiliated with the city since it was launched in 2007 after a request from its commanding officer.
A year later a refurbished ground floor space in the Council House was named The HMS Diamond Suite.
A ceremonial Freedom Parade and reception will take place in the city at a date still to be determined.
Among the other holders of the Freedom of the City were the crew of HMS Coventry until it was decommissioned in 2002.
Council leader John Mutton said: "There are only a handful of people who have the Freedom of the City of Coventry and we believe this accolade for HMS Diamond is truly deserved."
Lord Mayor Tim Sawdon added: "I hope this honour will help us to continue to build on the links Coventry has always shared with the Royal Navy."
