Coventry's street lights are to be replaced

Postby dutchman » Mon Feb 15, 2010 8:36 pm

Coventry's street lighting system is to be replaced within the next five years to reduce the city's carbon footprint.

The city council said it hoped the £64m privately-funded scheme would reduce energy levels by up to 40%.

The redevelopment is expected to start in August and could cut the council's electricity bill by £684,000 a year.

The leader of Coventry City Council, councillor Ken Taylor, said he hoped it would give Coventry "the best lighting of any city in this country".

He added: "Many of our street lights are old and in need of repair, but we have a fantastic opportunity not only to replace around 88% of them but also to protect the environment."

If this is anything like the PFI deal which financed the new hospital they will end up costing eight times what they are actually worth and people will still be paying for them for generations to come

Aren't these new lights also alleged to be suitable for yet more surveillance cameras?
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
