Gordon Brown set to scrap early release scheme for prisoners 'within weeks'

The early release scheme for prisoners is to be scrapped before the next general election.

Gordon Brown is set to announce the move within weeks – with urgent last-minute talks under way between Downing Street, the Home Office and the Ministry of Justice.

The Prime Minister will unveil the plan as part of a major speech on law and order next month.

‘It is out intention to do this before the election if we can,’ a source told The Observer.
