The idea has support in every political party, but Nick Clegg has blocked it because he fears that small reforms will weaken the case for abolishing the Lords and creating an elected chamber.


The House of Lords is just a talking shop these days with no real powers. An example is the government's so-called "Bedroom Tax" against which the Lords made a very powerful argument but were simply overruled by House of Commons. A similar example is the Digital Economy Bill.

Whether they are elected or unelected in the future they have ceased to have any relevance.
