Four new independent retailers are about to join one of Leamington’s busiest shopping streets and fill a space that has been empty for several years.

The Leamington-based Midland Assured Developments has now completed its re-fitting of four retail units next to the Angel Hotel in Regent Street.

Two of the units have been sold to independent businesses and it is believed that one will be a kitchen design shop and the other will be an interior design shop.

The other two, which are still under offer, could be transformed into restaurants, cafes, takeaways or delis as both premises have been granted planning permission to serve hot food.

Midland Assured has spent more than £250,000 on converting the building into modern retail units.

One of the firm’s directors, Simon Davis, said: “The new units have been developed to modern specification and standards but are still very much in keeping with the street scene for which Regent Street is famous.

“This was an important consideration to us and we are very pleased with the outcome. We expect all the units to be occupied by Christmas, which will be a great result.”

He added that both Stephanie Kerr, director of BID Leamington and Parminder Birdi, chairman of the Leamington Chamber of Trade, have said they are pleased to see this site developed and welcome positive investment in the town.

Mr Davis said: “They agreed that it is a significant improvement to this part of the town centre, which already attracts a number of high quality independent and boutique retailers and they look forward to seeing the units occupied.”

While there are still several empty business premises in Leamington town centre, the town centre management last week welcomed the news that Leamington’s branch of JJB Sports was selected as one of only 20 around the country to be saved from closure by Sport Direct International, which bought the 20 branches after JJB went into administration.

David Butler, acting town centre manager, said that the town continues to maintain a lower percentage of vacant retail units than the national average.

Any businesses or individuals interested in the two remaining outlets in Regent Street should call Midland Assured on 889848 or Wareing & Co on 430700.
