A healthy 30 positions are up for grabs as Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council has announced that discount trader ‘99p Stores’ are to set up shop.

The business will be moving into the former home of TJHughes and Woolworths.

Councillor Dennis Harvey, leader of the council, which owns the Queens Road-based building, said:“Times have changed and spending trends have shifted and it has made stores such as 99p Stores and Poundland an attractive option for shoppers.

“Discount stores can be found in all the major towns and cities up and down the country and are extremely popular as they offer value for money.” The firm is currently working with the Jobcentre Plus to fill the vacancies.

99p Stores was founded 11 years ago and already has 202 branches throughout the UK.

The new Nuneaton store is part of a massive expansion plan for the company that will see dozens more shops open across the country.

The opening of the store represents a boost for the town centre as 99p Stores is currently one of the fastest growing retailers nationally, offering big name products at a discounted price.

Cllr Harvey added:“I am sure that shoppers in the Borough will be delighted that a shop unit in a prime location in the town centre is no longer vacant and has been filled by a leading high street name.”

Nuneaton mum attempts world record trolley dash at new 99p store

A MUM-of-two from Nuneaton will be attempting a world record trolley-dash to celebrate the grand opening of the town’s new 99p Store.

Cheryl Bradbury will be given 99 seconds to sprint round the new shop in Queens Road next Tuesday morning – and if she beats the current world record of 265 items in 99 seconds the store will double her haul.

She will also be asked to officially open the shop at 9.30am, just after finishing her ‘dash’.

The busy mum, who runs QCF Training Solutions, said: “I can’t wait to do the dash and shall be studying TV Supermarket Sweep footage for tips!”

The Nuneaton store is the budget chain’s 204th and has created 30 new jobs.
