£900 needed save kitten's leg...

Postby dutchman » Thu Aug 16, 2012 1:07 pm

Six-month-old Potter the cat is calling for help to fund treatment for a broken leg.

The kitten was taken to the RSPCA after he was found in Coventry with an injured leg and received emergency treatment.

X-rays revealed Potter’s leg may have been broken for at least a week.

Glenn Mayoll, RSPCA animal centre manager, said the only way to save the cat’s leg now is specialist surgery which will cost up to £900.

He said: “It would be great if we could save poor Potter’s leg. We have to give him the chance.”

Mr Mayoll is now asking for generous people in Coventry and Warwickshire to help fund the surgery.

Caroline Hailstone, cattery supervisor, added: “We know money is tight for everyone at the moment but we have to help these animals, if we don’t who will?”

Telegraph readers help pay for Potter the kitten's operation

CAT lovers in Coventry and Warwickshire have come to the rescue of Potter the kitten who needed money for emergency treatment.

Potter came into the care of the RSPCA Coventry & Nuneaton Animal Centre, in Coundon, earlier this month after being found with serious leg injuries.

Staff appealed via the Coventry Telegraph to raise £900 for the six-month-old stray to receive specialist leg surgery.

But generous readers exceeded all their expectations by donating more than £1,500. The extra cash will go towards helping more cats get the treatment they need.

Potter has now had his operation and is to be recovering well. Staff hope he will be fit enough to go to a new home by October.

Caroline Hailstone, cattery supervisor, said: “The response to our plea has been fantastic.

“We would like to send a heartfelt thanks to all the feline fans that have stepped up to help us with the problems we are facing with cat issues.”

Earlier this month, the centre urged owners to get their cats neutered to help slow down the massive overpopulation of cats in the area.

Since then, the Easipetcare clinic on centre’s Coundon Wedge Drive site has been inundated with calls for people wanting to take advantage of the RSPCA’s services.

The centre has also seen a surge in people adopting cats with 28 cats finding a new home already this month.

One of those still waiting is Molly, who has been at the centre since January and needs a new home.

To make an appointment at the Easipetcare clinic, call 024 7633 8069 or to visit any of the cats at the centre visit between 11am to 4pm every day except Tuesdays.

Stray cat Potter finds new home after Coventry Telegraph readers help fund emergency surgery

IT’S a happy ending for stray cat Potter who has found a new home with a loving family after Telegraph readers helped raise cash for his emergency surgery.

Six-month-old Potter touched the hearts of animal lovers across the city and abroad when Coventry’s RSPCA centre issued a desperate appeal via the Telegraph for donations to pay for £900 surgery to fix his broken leg.

Stray cat Potter came into the care of the RSPCA Coventry & Nuneaton Animal Centre, in Coundon, in August after he was found with serious leg injuries.

After the appeal went out, donations arrived thick and fast from generous members of the public.

A donation even made it over from France to help RSPCA staff fund the specialist surgery Potter needed to save his leg. In total more than £1,500 was donated by well-wishers.

Potter recovered well and quickly found a home with new owner Juliette Sewell. Juliette collected Potter last month to take him home to join her family and she is already considering taking on another cat as company for him.

Juliette, of Solihull, said: ‘I cannot thank the staff at the RSPCA Coventry and Nuneaton Animal Centre enough for all their hard work and dedication in ensuring our Potter had the best opportunity to make a full recovery and to save his leg.

“I am so glad we are able to offer him a home and we can’t wait to get him settled in.”

Caroline Hailstone, RSPCA cattery supervisor, said the centre was astonished by the show of generosity.

She said: “Firstly we really want to say a massive thank you for all the donations.

“We were completely overwhelmed with the response to Potter’s appeal.

“He has been a pleasure to have in the cattery and has responded brilliantly to his treatment.

“We are so pleased to see him going off to his new home finally after many weeks of recovery.”

The RSPCA Centre continues to be overwhelmed with unprecedented numbers of cats needing their help and the RSPCA branch is urging cat owners to get their pets neutered and chipped.

The RSPCA centre has joined forces with the Coventry Cat Group, Easipetcare and Cats Protection to hold an animal action day on Monday, October 29 from noon–6pm.

It takes place at Rose Community Centre in Spon End where organisers will be offering free micro-chipping and free cat neutering.

Vaccinations will also be available from £15 and low cost dog and rabbit neutering vouchers can also be purchased on the day.
