Cheylesmore residents call for extra parking in Quinton Park

Postby dutchman » Fri Aug 10, 2012 2:43 pm

A PROPOSAL to create more parking spaces outside a parade of shops in Coventry has been added to a list of possible schemes for consideration.

As reported in the Telegraph last month a petition containing 1,100 signatures has called on the city council to create a parking bay in Quinton Park, Cheylesmore.

Petitioners say the road is too narrow and becomes congested when buses stop, and claim part of the footpath could be removed to make the road wider and create a parking bay.

Coventry council agrees to parking improvements in Cheylesmore's Quinton Park after residents' petition

A COMMUNITY is celebrating after the council agreed to improve parking along a popular shopping parade.

A petition signed by more than 1,100 Coventry people was handed in last month calling for something to be done about Quinton Park, Cheylesmore.

Residents and shopkeepers say the road near the parade of shops is too narrow to cope with congestion – especially when cars are parked.

They want the pavement narrowed to provide a proper parking bay so there is enough space on the road for larger vehicles to pass each other.

Rois Ali, who lives nearby in Warwick Road and shops regularly in Quinton Parade, organised a petition which was handed in to the council.

In a meeting earlier this month the petition was accepted by cabinet member for city services, Coun Lindsley Harvard, and it was decided work will start improving the parking situation as soon as funding is available.

Mr Ali said: “It’s very good news for the local residents and shopkeepers.

“There are a lot of problems because of the narrow road. Buses are unable to pass each other so have to reverse to let the other pass, which can be dangerous. There have been minor accidents. People are thankful the council have taken the petition seriously. It’s the first step towards improving this area.

“The main problem is because the pavement is so wide. If they reduced this and created a parking bay it would provide more space on the road. I was delighted with the response to the petition as more than 1,000 people signed it.”

Councillor Harjinder Singh Sehmi (Lab, Cheylesmore), who handed in the petition on behalf of the residents, said the council’s decision is definitely good news.

“It has been agreed on principle that they will do the work, as soon as funding is available. It could be as soon as six months, or it could be longer,” he said.

“But people are very happy that the council has taken the decision to do something. This area can be very dangerous, it is a tricky junction. It’s not just good for the residents but also the shopkeepers.”
