There has been another accident at a controversial new bus lane where 1,500 drivers were fined in one week.

It is the third accident in the first three months at the beleagured Stoney Road "bus gate" near Coventry station, contrasting with two in the previous three years.

Protests have been mounting over safety and fines at the "bus gate", which has divided local residents and hit the national headlines for its sneaky camera hidden in a tree.

The camera was later vandalised two weeks ago, and taken down by council officers.

It is now set to be re-installed at a more visible position across the road.

Eye witnesses today reported a third accident involving a green Rover saloon, which ploughed into a signpost of the bus gate’s central reservation, at the junction with Manor Road.

The signpost was later moved onto the pavement.

The bus gate, including a new one-way system and 20mph zone, was intended to relieve traffic congestion in residential streets, which had been expected to become further congested after traffic changes to the ring road outside the station.
