Coventry pupils visit miniature steam train exhibition

Pupils from seven special schools in Coventry and Warwickshire were all smiles this week as they enjoyed getting up close to miniature steam trains at an exhibition at Copsewood Sports and Social Club, in Allard Way.

About 150 children attended the event on Wednesdday and were able to get up close to the different locomotives as well as being taken on rides on some of the trains.

The event is held every year by the GEC Coventry Model Engineering Society.

Gary Bland, social secretary, said the club always enjoys entertaining the children by showing them the trains.

“The weather held out and everybody had a good day,” he said.

“The children liked the larger trains the most and loved how close they could get to them.

“It’s the 14th year we’ve run the event. It was originally started by the then chairman’s wife, who did a lot of work with special needs.

"When she passed away we decided to rename the event Joan’s Fun Day in her memory.”

I'm amazed the engineering society is still going long after the demise of GEC?

I visited their miniature railway exhibition once in the 1960's at a GEC sports day when a friend's father was an employee of their's.
