Peach Pubs, which owns the Star and Garter in Warwick Street, has been given permission to add a two-storey block to the back of the pub by Warwick District Council’s planning committee.

The council’s conservation officer had expressed concern that there will be a balcony that could be used as a public area and may encourage the use of umbrellas, tables and chairs at that level, which he felt “would not create a fitting view” in what is a protected area.

The Conservation Area Advisory Forum said: “The loss of sash windows to the front and rear would be detrimental to the historic integrity of the building.”

Eight letters of objection were also sent to the council, pointing out that people living nearby would suffer from increased noise, disturbance and parking pressure and “smell nuisance” from the kitchen, while they also felt the building would be out of character in the street.
