Crowds of people were treated to a spectacular display of three iconic war aircrafts in Coventry’s city centre

Hundredsof people flocked to Broadgate and took a closer look at the full-scale replica World War Two planes, a Spitfire, Hurricane and Messerschmitt – all of which played a part in the Battle of Britain.

The War and Peace Battle of Britain Experience commemorated pilots Robert Stanford Tuck, Adolph 'Sailor' Malan and Adolf Galland.

Eager children queued up for the chance to sit in the cockpits of three planes.

One of the organisers Ken Ditchfield said: “It was absolutely packed over the weekend.

“People have been saying the city centre needed something like this to brighten up the place a bit.

“Some have been flabbergasted that the full-scale replicas were actually in front of them.

“It’s been a really good turnout and a fun way for the children to learn about the history.”

I wondered where they'd acquired a Mk1 Spifire till I read it was replica!

Note the abnormally slender wings and lcut-down canopy more tytpical of a racing plane. Great for maximum speed but a hinderence in every other respect:

Very nice, but hardly Coventry history!! Surely they should have had a Heinkel III, Dornier DO17, Junkers Ju88, and e.g. a Hurricane...? After all, they were what were involved over Coventry! And a 4.5 inch Ack-Ack gun and searchlight would have completed the picture.

But I bet they'll be viewed as such by a lot of people!
