A walk through threatened ancient woodland in Warwickshire is being held by a campaign group fighting the HS2 rail plan.

Cubbington Action Group against HS2 is leading another of its Anemone Walks through South Cubbington Wood on Easter Monday.

The walk focuses on the carpet of anemones which when flowering, cover much of the wood floor.

The anemones are thought to prove the woodland could date back as far as the last ice age.

A six-foot patch is thought to indicate 100 years of development.

Chairman Peter Delow said: “The soil has remained undisturbed for centuries and this lack of disturbance has allowed the spectacular carpet of wood anemones.

“I’ve calculated 70,000 lorry loads of spoil will need to be carried away from the HS2 cutting through South Cubbington Wood.

"It’s unlikely the heavy machinery will be able to work without causing severe damage.”

The walk will leave at 2.30pm from the King’s Head in Church Hill.
