A trio of homes in Carnation Way, Bermuda Park, were the victim of criminals out to steal lead from properties.

The unknown offenders made off with the expensive loot from garages at three separate addresses.

Warwickshire Police are now hoping to trace those responsible and are putting out a warning to residents throughout Nuneaton, Bedworth and North Warwickshire to be on their guard.

Patrick Devereux, who is the force’s Safer Neighbourhoods Inspector for the area, said that the crime is becoming an increasing problem, but was one that he was keen to stamp out.

Officers are working with scrap dealers, but householders have their own part to play by not giving the thieves any easy opportunities.

“We had three houses which had the lead flashing stolen from the garage roof,” explained Inspector Devereux.

“We are obviously aware that metal theft is an increasing problem which causes inconvenience and expense to householders. We are taking steps to try and halt this problem and are increasing our checks on scrap dealers and metal collectors.

“We are also working closely with scrap dealers asking them to report people bringing in lead flashing and copper pipe. We would urge people to consider the following crime prevention advice to try and make such thefts harder to commit.’’

Residents are asked to ensure that their wheelie bins and similar items that can be used to gain access to a flat roof are not readily available.

People should also invest in anti climb paint which is readily available in DIY stores and can make climbing onto a roof harder. It will also mark the offender as it is thick greasy paint making them easier to identify.

Finally, using Smart Water and displaying SmartWater signs can make the metal easier to identify when officers are conducting stop checks or when visiting scrap dealers.

“Specialist roof alarm systems are available,” added Insp Devereux.

“Join a local Neighbourhood Watch Scheme. If none exists contact your local Safer Neighbourhood team for advice.”

If anyone has any information about these or similar crimes, they are asked to contact their local police on 101 or they can report information anonymously via the Crimestoppers Hotline on 0800 555 111. Calls to this number are free from a landline and completely confidential.
