The Environment Agency says water levels in Coventry and Warwickshire are at their lowest level on record.

David Hudson, of the agency, said: "The figures for the last 12 months show it's been the driest year on record."

He said 11 Warwickshire farmers with water licences had been asked to restrict water abstraction.

Former Warwickshire NFU President Harry Johnson said: "There's a huge amount of concern, farmers can't fill their reservoirs."

He said: "The soil should be saturated but in fact there's still moisture deficit, we need to be recharging ground water but it just isn't happening.

"We're going to need quite a lot of water to get those levels back up, looking forward we've got some serious issues to think about."
