Work to reduce traffic congestion in the town centre is now set to go ahead next month after a public consultation.

Following the work which was completed in Castle Lane by the Warwick Traffic Forum, primarily to widen the pavements for pedestrians, the next phase will begin next month after being given the go-ahead by the Warwickshire County Council Area Committee.

The traffic forum has spent the last year compiling a plan which identifies ways in which High Street and Jury Street can be improved, reducing traffic speeds and making it more user friendly for pedestrians and visitors to the town.

At the same time they are also trying to ensure that the design of crossing features and the choice of materials is in-keeping with the town.

The plan outlines several new crossing points level with the pavement which have a central island, parking and loading spaces on both sides of the road, and changes to the access of Brook Street.

In November project manager Philippa Young said the project was “all about reducing the dominance of vehicles in the town centre and reducing vehicle speed.”

The plans have been welcomed in the town and chairman of the Warwick Chamber of Trade Sue Butcher said: “We have been involved in the process. We are pleased and optimistic.

“It’s the best time for it to happen, that’s why we are so pleased. One of our stipulations was that work had to start now and be wrapped up by Easter.”

Town clerk Derek Maudlin added: “The town council welcomes the proposal but suggested a way of improving the plan by making it a left turn only from Castle Street. It is very definite progress on the town centre traffic scheme which is very welcome.”
