Councils across Coventry and Warwickshire have been given £3.1million to help elderly people live in their own homes for longer.

Councils have also been urged to allow the elderly to downsize to free up lager properties for families with the government funding.

The grant, which has increased by £309,000 across all of our councils, will pay for adaptations to allow pensioners and the disabled to live at home rather than in expensive residential care homes.

Housing minister Grant Shapps said: “For too long the housing needs of the elderly have been neglected.

The New Deal for Older People funding breaks down at around £1.4million for Coventry City Council.

Nuneaton & Bedworth Borough Council will then receive £551,000, Warwick District Council £333,360, Stratford District Council £322,910, North Warwickshire Borough Council £264,410 and Rugby Borough Council £239,580.
