The Electric Railway Museum near Coventry has won one of the country’s top rail preservation awards.

The Baginton attraction, which houses the UK’s largest collection of preserved electric trains, was named ‘best small group’ by the Heritage Railway Association.

The award identifies the work done by the charity since it opened in 2008 as “an outstanding contribution to the preservation of less fashionable stock outside the scope of most heritage railways”.

It is run by volunteers and funded by donations from the public.

Museum chairman Graeme Gleaves said: “This is the highest level of recognition we could achieve in the UK railway heritage sector.

“It is testament to everything that we have worked so hard to achieve over the last few years and proof that what we are doing is not only the right thing, but that the results are being noticed far beyond our own perimeter fence.

“I cannot thank all the volunteers enough who have worked effortlessly to make this happen.

"We’ve turned the site from a storage depot to a viable museum and this award is something for us all to share and celebrate.”

Robin Jones, editor of Heritage Railway magazine, said: “What the Electric Railway Museum is doing is preservation in its purest form.”

The award was announced on December 5th, it's taken a whole month for the Telegraph to catch up!

Also, I wouldn't mind the museum so much but none of the exhibits has any connection with the Coventry area. I'd rather see a preservation project based on one the abandoned industrial lines around the city.
