Thousands of homes across Coventry and Warwickshire will have access to faster broadband by next summer.

BT has announced that 13,600 homes and businesses in Cheylesmore, Harbury, Wellesbourne and Wolston will be included in the latest roll-out plans for their next generation broadband service delivered over copper lines.

The change means broadband will be available at speeds of up to 20 megabits per second – more than double the maximum speed previously available to most homes and businesses across the UK.

The technology is expected to reach nearly 90 per cent of West Midlands’ premises by the middle of 2012.

Warwickshire county councillor Alan Cockburn, portfolio holder for sustainable communities, said: “We very much welcome this latest announcement.

“Faster broadband is going to play an essential role in the future success of the county.

“Like roads and railways, broadband is a vital part of the essential infrastructure of Warwickshire.”

It's not really 'broadband'. It's ADSL which is useless for much except viewing BT's premium services at extra cost.

True broadband (SDSL) costs hundreds of pounds per month and is only available to selected business customers in the UK. Despite the regular drip-feed of attention grabbing headlines, Britain is falling further and further behind other countries in this respect.
